[1] Nickantony Quach is the author of the 2022 book Life in 184 Words, also known as Thumoslang on the Run (OTR). It is the first book written to teach Thumoslang. Unintentionally created in 2017, accidentally discovered in 2018, and first taught in 2019, Thumoslang is the first formal vocabulary for social life. Its mission is social clarity, and its objective is that people have a matching understanding, especially in difficult situations. Its immense power rests in its countless thumbnail definitions. All are based on the 2017 book THUMOS: Adulthood, Love, & Collaboration, also known as the original Thumos textbook (OTB). The following text explains the importance of the OTR book by demonstrating the importance of Thumoslang.

[2] The word bird is a shortcut for the following concept: an animal with wings. How good is the following thumbnail definition?

  • Bird; that means, an animal with wings.

[3] The above thumbnail definition is imperfect because it does not apply to every case. A bat is an animal with wings but not a bird. Below is a better version:

  • Bird; that means, an animal with wings and a beak.

[4] The above thumbnail definition does not tell you what a bird looks like. Instead, it tells you when the concept of a bird is at play, in use, or relevant in the context. With the technique of thumbnail definition, you know how to discharge the power of language in ways unimaginable to muggles who lack Thumoslang fluency or do not command thumbnail definitions.

  • Muggle; that means, not conversant.

[5] Each thumbnail definition specifies the condition when the named concept is at play in a few words. That gives Thumoslang users an effective way to prevent others from misinterpreting their speech and abusing them with linguistic ambiguity. That also helps them keep the unwanted yet preventable drama to a minimum, especially during difficult social situations. Consequently, they can change one’s worldview in a few sentences.

[6] Each thumbnail definition is an objective observation of a natural phenomenon. A thumbnail definition explains a term’s complex meaning in a few words, thereby identifying the concept in focus. Usually improved over time, each is falsifiable. That makes thumbnail definitions a science. The science of thumbnail definitions is called Thumoslang.

  • Dogma; that means, self-declared truth.
  • Falsifiable; that means, non-dogmatic.
  • Science; that means, the observation of phenomena.

[7] The more you command thumbnail definitions, the more you are fluent in Thumoslang. With Thumoslang fluency or high command of thumbnail definitions, you are more potent than you were led to believe. Here is a practical demonstration of Thumoslang and how to discharge the power of only a few thumbnail definitions. A phantom relationship is one in your mind but not in reality. To manage your relationships effectively, you must refrain from counting phantom relationships. When a “relationship” fails to generate the same history in the mind of each partner, it is a phantom relationship.

  • Existence; that means, generated history.
  • Phantom; that means, no substantial existence.

[8] Try this for size; gather all the coins in your pocket, wallet, and other nearby places. What’s the first step in managing your money? Correct, you must first count your money. When was the last time you counted all the relationships you currently have at one point or another? “Never” is an honest answer. That means you did not master your relationships. If you don’t, they are likely to master your life. Consider the following Thumoslang thumbnail definitions:

  • Involvement; that means, causing inclusion.
  • Relation; that means, purposeful involvement.
  • Relationship; that means, ongoing and independent relations.

[9] Using the above thumbnail definitions, you can determine precisely how many relationships you have.  With this number, you can manage your relationships systematically.

  • Systematically; that means, without self-serving bias.

[10] Here is how to interpret the above Thumoslang thumbnail definitions. You cannot have a relation in an activity with me if its purpose for you is different from its purpose for me. With two different purposes, it is a service, not a relation. You and I are not in a relationship because we do not have at least two ongoing, independent relations. That’s why we are not investing emotional and other resources into what goes on between the two of us.

[11] Is it time to master your relationships and stop them from mastering your life?

[12] Suppose the above text strongly affects your mind or makes you want to change your perspective. In that case, you are experiencing the power of only a few Thumoslang thumbnail definitions. Wait until you get a hold of 1,000 more from The Dictionary of Thumoslang.

[13] Various individuals used Thumoslang as a linguistic tool to fix their personal relationships. They could do that because Thumoslang allowed them to analyze the relationship. As a result, they could see that miscommunication about the precise understanding of respect and other fundamental concepts in social life was the root cause. They could only see things on that level with Thumoslang. It is safe to conclude that Thumoslang is a linguistic tool for analysis.

[14] Lexis and syntax are two of several linguistic levels of analysis. Is Thumoslang another linguistic level of analysis? The answer is likely to be a big YES. Reviewers can use thumbnail definitions to detect concept mislabeling in a written work. “I love my life,” says David, a random student. If he means to say, “I like my living conditions,” the original statement has two conceptual mislabels.

[15] Thumoslang is a mere collection of all thumbnail definitions. Its objective is to match understanding, whereas its mission is to prevent misinterpretation. It is a nomenclature full of operating terms for social life. Think of it as a collection of operating terms people use to have a matching collective understanding while maintaining their individuality. As a result, they become more mature and sophisticated in social life.

[16] Thumoslang’s immense power rests in its thumbnail definitions. Calling each a definition is a misnomer. A thumbnail definition does not describe a concept but rather when it is at play (currently occurring) to ensure the user selects the correct sense of the word. When interlocutors independently make the same selection for a term in focus during a discussion, they have a matching understanding. Thumoslang’s thumbnail definitions accomplish their mission by reminding interlocutors of the correct sense for a term in focus. The thumbnails use only a few words and thus avoid promoting unnecessary sideboard discussion.

[17] Memorizing math facts from a multiplication table prevents the waste of time on low-level calculations. Likewise, memorizing Thumoslang thumbnail definitions prevents the waste of time on low-level explanations. That should help teachers and professors avoid wasting their time patronizing students. It is not unreasonable to think of Thumoslang as a multiplication table for social life.

[18] If you want to connect better with those around you, sharpen your discernment, and become an expert in social life, speak Thumoslang. For those unfamiliar with the concept, discernment means knowing what lies behind another person’s words. It’s the ability to find the root of the matter.

  • Discernment; that means, visual differences.

[19] With Thumoslang fluency or high command of thumbnail definitions, you are more powerful than you have been led to believe. The more thumbnail definitions you know, the faster you can understand when you read or listen. You can speak fewer words using thumbnail definitions to convey more comprehensive messages. That’s how you save time in your everyday life and put yourself on a faster track toward your ideals.

[20] You can use thumbnail definitions to save time studying, presenting, and creating for school, work, and the rest of your life. That applies to professionals, intellectuals, and everyone else. To start a slow-burn journey transforming your life based on Thumoslang, begin with the book Life in 184 Words.
